The History and Success Of Thorney Park
The front 9 holes was once an area of land restoration and the back 9 holes
started its life as a rich fertile market garden site supplying many types of
fresh quality produce to London and the Home Counties. The original Grade II
farm buildings are situated on the site and have been recently converted to
luxury private homes. Now the site plays host to a friendly and welcoming club
with exceptional course conditions all year round. The front 9 holes opened in
September 1993 with undulating fairways and extensive tree planting; the
strategic position of bunkers and water hazards ensures then; as it does today;
a great test of golf for all standards of golfers. Once the front 9 had matured
and achieved an excellent reputation further land was purchased and the course
evolved into an established 18-hole members’ golf club renowned locally for its
design, condition and layout.
The success of Thorney Park evolves from not standing still, since the first tee
shot was struck over 2 million pounds has been invested around the club to make
it an enjoyable playing experience. Part of this investment was assigned to
fully automated state of the art irrigation and extensive drainage systems to
ensure the course remains open throughout the year. The tees and greens have
been constructed to USGA standards this means the greens roll incredibly well
and you are ensured of no temporary tees or greens in the winter months.
New competition tees, water features, a practice range, putting green and car
park security have also been recently added to improve your golfing experience.
Thorney Park is proud to announce that in the last few years it has been chosen
to host local BB&O professional and amateur events in addition to being selected
to host a NAPGC finals competition.
Thorney Park has evolved from a 9 hole predominantly pay and play course in at
best average condition to an 18 hole predominantly members club presented all
year round in excellent condition. This transformation has been bought about by
a commitment in terms of investment in modern state of the art cutting
machinery, irrigation and drainage and a management team both on and off the
course dedicated to achieving and maintaining the highest possible standards for
members and visitors.
